Great Website. My mother's family is from Elkhorn West •••••••• and old family names are Semonco, Dimun and Safran. Todd Sekela, what is/are the names of your family in Elkhorn WV?

admin: My particular family names were Surway, which was the alglicization of Szervej. My father's family was more proud of the Anglicized version, as they tried to distance themselves from what was perceived as a stigma of coming from eastern europe.

Great site in a WWW of too many pages, this one I can use. Paternal Great Grandparents are (as best as I can tell) from this town, then emigrated to Elkhorn, WV to work the coal mines. I was able to converse with Nick a bit and unfortunately there was not a whole lot of family talk about the old country. This site gives me a jumping off point to find out more. WV has excellent digitized birth/death/marriage records. Now onto the church records at familysearch.org.

Thanks for the site Nick!

I am thrilled to come across this webpage. My great-grandfather Alec Hrywniak married Mary Yurchak (Jurak) in the USA. Mary's mother was Julia Kulik and her husband's name was "Wash" (I think). I am looking for any relatives that may have been related to this blood line. Please do not hesitate to email me. I would love to learn more about my family history. I would love to visit this charming area. It reminds me much of my home in Sweet Valley, Pennsylvania USA

admin: Welcome to the Certizne website! This was the ultimate object of establishing the site, and it is our sincere hope that others will not only continue to do so, but be able to connect with fellow villagers.

Very nice site and great to see where my family originated from. Smetana and Lasky are the names and my cousin just visited there.
If anyone reading this has any family tree information / links that would be super!

Great legwork on this site. Not sure if my part of the Sekela family came from this village (my grandfather was the last generation from Slovakia and he did not talk a lot about his time there before he died) but it is nice to read about the region my people are from.

Nick, nice job with this website. I was able to show it to my father, who wanted to see where his father lived as a boy before coming to America. The Mendlowitz's have scattered, but thrive.
